Banking on Change. Mbeere, Kenya

Province

The Anglican Church of Kenya

Diocese

Mbeere

Goal

Financial literacy, access to finance, creating new livelihoods and poverty reduction.

Activity

We have modules for training in financial literacy and we provide banking facilities and small business selection and training. We spend one week on training using the modules and then mobilise savings. People borrow money and repay with interest. They share out the money, and the interest makes the pot of money grow. They have a total of 47 groups in the diocese, each consisting of ten to 20 people.

75 per cent of the members of the groups are women.

They are now training people in employable skills and entrepreneurial skills.

Outcomes

Over 2 1/2 years we have accumulated KSH 29 million in savings across the 47 groups. One group has as many as 8,000 members.
