Indigenous People: West Malaysia

Archbishop Moon Hing worshipping with the Orang Asli

The Board for Indigenous Work of the Anglican Diocese of West Malaysia, write:

“The work by the Anglican Diocese of West Malaysia among the indigenous people (Orang Asli) began in 1995 under the leadership of the then Rev. Ng Moon Hing (now Archbishop) and Canon Dr. Teoh Soong Kee.

“From initial village ministries, it has spread to income-generating and economic empowerment projects such as goat, fish and duck rearing and rice-planting.

“In December, 2014, a new venture, Rumah Shalom, was started to provide residential care for Orang Asli secondary students who are from remote areas.  The initiative was by St. Paul’s Church, Penang with the Vision: “For Orang Asli youths to gain self-confidence through good education and achievements.  This will cause them to be an agent of change for their community.”

“We look forward to the future, when these young men and women will become the leaders of their community, church and our nation”.
