Diocese of Machakos, Kenya, launches ‘Mustard Seed Project’ to support social transformation

The diocese’s vision is of a transforming, caring and growing church, that equips people with tools to transform society. 

Key projects include:

  • Support for People Living With Disabilities

  • Health Clinics (Curative & Preventive Services)

  • Rehabilitation Centres (Marriage, Sex and Family ) 

  • Trust groups (Church Community Self Help Groups)

  • Church Community Projects for socio-economic transformation
  • Educational Centres (Early Child-hood & Polytechnics)

  • Converting an unused building into a guesthouse
  • Stewardship & Leadership Training Programs. 

The Church also works in sustainablility programmes including water sanitation and a resource centre. Women’s empowerment projects are a priority, such as that at St. Peter’s Katelembo, where women use machinery to make briquettes as part of a Trust Group training session (pictured). 

The diocese are looking to build capacity further by setting up companion links, building funds for their programmes, and hiring volunteers for training and projects. 

Anglican Board of Mission supports the Dioceses of Machakos and Makueni with leadership and management training.  

About the diocese

The Diocese of Machakos, in the Anglican Church of Kenya, was created in 1985.  It has since been divided in Kitui Diocese (1995), Garissa Diocese (2007) and recently Makueni diocese (2013), with Machakos Diocese remaining.

The Diocese is geographically situated in Machakos County, Lower Eastern Region in Kenya. It is in Machakos Town 65km South East of Nairobi. The climate is semi-arid, and dependent on rain-fed agriculture.

The Diocese is estimated to have 7,000 members. It has a dedicated secretariat of twelve administrative and support staff. There is also a team of 53 full-time clergy, 17 attached-clergy, six evangelists who minister in the parishes within the diocese, and five clergy seconded to other institutions.  It has six Archdeaconries covering the entire Machakos County namely :

  • Athi River Archdeaconry

  • Kangundo Archdeaconry

  • Yatta Archdeaconry

  • Mwala Archdeaconry

  • Kathiani Archdeaconry
