Church of Burundi assists local communities affected by landslide disaster

Landslide damage

Local communities south of Bujumbura have recently suffered from devastating landslides. Roads and bridges were swept away, schools, health centres, solar power and churches were destroyed or damaged by boulders or mudslides.

As well as damaging the social infrastructure, the landslides destroyed homes and swept away household equipment. In the fields, trees and crops, such as beans, cassava, sweet potatoes and nuts, were destroyed and small domestic animals were swept away.

The Church’s response to landslides

In response, staff from the provincial office in Bujumbura have been working with local teams in the dioceses of Rumonge and Bujumbura to prepare a proposal to support two communities to rebuild after the devastation caused by landslides last month. They plan to rebuild 150 homes, rehabilitate 4 community water points and rebuild 150 latrines, as well as providing school materials for 300 children to allow them to continue their education and blankets for the 150 households with new homes.

Léonidas Niyongabo, provincial development and relief officer, asks for support for the proposal to help these communities rebuild their lives. He also asks us to “pray for all victims of climate change around the world and for all who suffer from poverty”. He also asks us to “advocate for policy makers, so that they act positively for the total eradication of the causes of climate change to give life on Earth as God gave it to us”. He urges us to assist the victims of natural disasters and poor governance around the world.
