St Anselm is a radical new religious community being formed by the Archbishop of Canterbury at Lambeth Palace in London.
In a unique experiment, next year Archbishop Justin Welby will open up his home in London to young Christians – inviting them to spend a year living, studying and praying at the heart of the Anglican Communion.
Members will live in a way the ancient monastics would recognise: seeking to draw closer to God through a daily rhythm of silence, study and prayer. But through those disciplines, and in fellowship together, they will also be immersed in the modern challenges of the global 21st century church.
Archbishop Justin said, “I expect this venture to have radical impact – not just for the individuals who participate but for life at Lambeth Palace, across the Church and in the world we seek to serve. This is what we expect in following Jesus. I urge young people to step up: here is an open invitation to be transformed and to transform.”
The community will be drawn from all walks of life, and all countries of the Anglican Communion. No formal qualifications are needed – just a passion to know God more deeply, an eagerness to listen to his voice and a sense of adventure.
The invitation – and challenge – is to spend a year in God’s time. This will mean taking a courageous step aside from the busyness of contemporary life to listen to God: what he desires for our wounded world, and how he longs to equip us to be part of its healing.
But the year is just the beginning. The hope is that, after 12 months, members will go back into the world with a fresh sense of God’s plan for them – and a passion to live out that plan, whatever their walk of life.
