Church of England stands #WithSyria in a global campaign to end the three year crisis

4 March 2014

#WithSyria is a global coalition urging world leaders to end the violence and suffering of millions of Syrians.  The Church of England has joined the campaign and opens the call to provinces across the Communion.

March 15th marks the third anniversary of the crisis.  #WithSyria wants to make sure this year is the last.  They said:

“After three years of violence, we must show our leaders that we will not give up on the people of Syria, that they must act to bring an end to the bloodshed and to get aid to all those who need it.”

To stand with the people of Syria and join the campaign, go to http://www.with-syria.org/ and see how you can get involved.

Vigils around the world are being held to mark the third anniversary of the crisis – you can join a vigil or arrange your own with the interactive map on the #WithSyria website.

The Church of England will be taking part in a key event at Trafalgar Square in London, on Thursday 13th March from 6-7pm. They said, “Join us for the #WithSyria London event as we mark the third anniversary of the Syrian conflict.

“You will be joining people around the world in a global solidarity movement. We’re asking people in every country to shine a light of hope for the people of Syria, to send a clear message to our leaders that we will not give up on the people of Syria. We will show every child, woman, and man struggling to survive through this conflict that we are with them, that we are #WithSyria.

“We need to make sure that we use the opportunity of the anniversary to demonstrate solidarity with Syrian children and families caught up in the conflict, and to urge world leaders to do more to get help to Syrians and bring the conflict to an end.

“We also want to challenge the assumption that the general public don’t really care about Syria.  Events worldwide, including lighting up of global iconic buildings will create images that press and social media will send out across the world to gather support from the public for Syrian children and families affected by the fighting.

“Join us in Trafalgar Square for a special kind of vigil featuring a soundscape and projection onto Nelson’s Column which will highlight the world’s hope for Syria, marked with our celebrity ambassadors, who will share their experiences of visiting the region.”

Wherever you are in the Anglican Communion, you can join the Church of England and shine a light on Syria.  Stand #WithSyria and call on world leaders to make decisions that will make a difference.
